“For all the talk of “tolerance” there is NONE with regards to the Church”

Hypocrisy

ISo far as former anything, I think it is typical for them to become the most_________(fill in the new sect), and to roundly criticize their former beliefs. I think that is just human nature. We all want to believe that we are right and that those we’ve left behind are blind fools.
I think you are right. For unrelated reasons I was reading through the book “Mistakes were made:but not by Me (^)” and one of the central themes of the book is a discussion around how one’s feelings of justification are entangled with their feelings of self worth.

There is also an undercurrent in secular culture, especially among liberals but its spreading out more and more, that rejects any notion of being “discriminatory”.

In fact its to a degree that being “Indiscriminate” is becoming a moral imperative.

Of course this theory of “Indiscriminateness” almost never leads to “indiscrimitnateness” of action.

Since the whole foundation of rational thought is based upon discriminating against the “worse” in favor of the “better”, any idea or policy or organization or institution which claims to be “better” is deemed by them to be necessarily “evil”. So it is essentially the rejection of rational thought altogether in favor of moral indifference(that is of course so long as you agree with them).

Since the Church claims to be the only means of salvation, this means that the Church must be one of the biggest evils in existence.

Since the Church has the audacity to assert that the Family(meaning father, mother, children) is the foundation of all human society, then necessarily the Church is evil, mysoginistic, and bigoted because it has the nerve to say that other “families” are “disordered.”

For these people, all morality is subjective and relative, “personal” or “individual”. Thus any organization which says that their morality is “the Truth” as opposed to other moralities is by definition “evil” because it it is discriminating against these other “moralities”.

Then there is the sheer size and breadth of the Church, that alone makes the Church “evil” to many of them. Because according to them the only way the Church could have gotten this big, was by “discriminating” against others. According to them the Church somewhere and in some way must have been “unjust” or “victimiized” somebody or some group somewhere in order to obtain it’s success.

Thus when they go into history and find it they instantly go “aha!” See! The Church IS “evil,” “racist”, “bigoted”, “mysoginistic”, “homophobic”, “xenophobic”, etc ad-nauseum.

There was an atheist and an agnostic on the Scripture forum demanding “justification” for Abraham owning slaves.

Of course the idea that they can make any moral judgments against anyone-since all morality is subjective and relative-is absolutely hypocritical and an obvious double standard. They simply have no moral basis or criteria to make any judgements at all.

Sadly I’m finding this strain of thought more and more the more I speak to people. I’m even finding it among people who call themselves Christians yet who favor gay marriage and even abortion.

Sorry, I have been insanely busy lately and will be for quite a while, briefly. my ‘kids’ are between 26 and 34… all are very liberal, two to the extreme… my wife is not catholic and also very liberal… womens rights and gay rights is huge for them…

They see me as a radical conservative. They see the Church as discriminatory towards gays and off base with pro-life…They are under the impression that the Church teaches that everyone who is not Catholic is condemned, and they will quote some popes as making that claim, and say that is what they were taught in school.

My oldest who is the most liberal to the point of being a self proclaimed card carrying socialist, says he can not see any evidence that God ever existed. the middle one at least now, believes there may be a God, since it would be arrogant/presumptuous to assume that humans are the ultimate life form in the universe.

The older two resents having ever been to Catholic schools - no specific reasons given… the middle one had wanted to go to a public HS but we would not allow it… academicly, the Catholic schools were/are much better. the youngest one hasn’t expressed any such reaction…yet…

All three are extremely smart, very active in social concerns, one works for a pro-choice local politician… they are idealist but to me pointed in the wrong direction. As far as they are concerned, I’m just another religious fanatic… I try not to lecture them, except before Easter and Christmas I usually send out a message about what I believe to be true about why we celebrate. Yes, I pray for them always, and thanks so much for your prayers as well.
