Why do babies have to die or suffer in this world?

My daughter asked me a question and I was not sure how to answer it. She asked me why is it that babies or small children have to suffer. For example, some friends of our lost a child of 3 years old of some rare illness. He was in the hospital for a long time they ran all kinds of tests on him and he eventually died. Another example why do little children have to suffer at the hands of pedifiles and abusive parents?
