Why do Catholics become Mormon?

1. Mormons can provide comfort in a time of loss. Their ideas about the afterlife, although unBiblical, are comforting to grieving ears (everyone goes to heaven, you can become a god in the afterlife). People are lost and want to believe what Mormonism teaches.
2. Catholics are not active in their faith.

Yes, quite true. I was very good friends with a large Catholic family who lost two sons in Vietnam. During this time of terrible suffering and grief, they were targeted and “love-bombed” by the local mormons. They subsequently joined the mormon “church”. Sad that their own Catholic parish did not not meet their need. WE are at fault for not meeting the needs of our fellow Catholics/Christians, WE are the ones who must be there for the suffering.

As I read about Mormonism I wonder why Catholics join the mormon church? It is so different from Catholicism I wonder what the appeal is. I know I have read some people liked the commericals or they read the Book of Mormon and felt it was true. I also read that people suffered from depression and such and the church was friendly.

I guess I would just like to know why people join. i don’t know if my family would ever join the Mormon church but I wonder why Catholics do

Conversion to any religion is a process. For many there is a motivation to leave their current church environment. They have either had their feelings hurt, they are lonely, they feel unfulfilled, etc. Then there are those who are draw to a religion because it meets their current interests; their needs are better fulfilled elsewhere, etc. There is a last group, which are those who are drawn to a religion for spiritual reasons. For those who join the Catholic Church it may be the Eucharist or the realization of belonging to a 2,000 year old church founded by Christ. For those who convert to the Mormon Church it may be their focus on the family, personal prayer/revelation, and the close relationships between members.

My thinking may be heretical, but I believe that God is active in the lives of everyone, even those who leave the Catholic Church. We do not understand His wondrous ways and what he is trying to achieve in the lives of each person. Maybe He is trying to teach them something and then will lead them back. I am convinced that some day we will all stand together as one before the Lord. I have faith that He will guide each of us who seeks Him to kneel before Him in adoration. There will be one faith and one unity.
