Why do Catholics eat Fish on Fridays?

My husband converted to being Catholic a few years ago, and has been asking me this
question ever since (I have been catholic all my life), he is wanting to know why we eat Fish on Fridays during lent, and also on Ash Wednesday? I have never really known the
reason why, other than it’s tradition. Could you please help me with this question.
