A non-Catholic co-worker asked me why Catholics pray to Mary and stated that only God can hear prayers. I wasn’t sure how to respond. Any help is appreciated.
Catholics ask Mary to pray for them because Catholics know that Mary is God’s Mother
(cf. Luke 1:42-43) and our spiritual Mother (cf. John 19:26-27), and thus is very interested in praying for us and with us (cf. Acts 1:14). Catholics believe that death does not separate us from fellow Christians (cf. Mark 12:24-27, Rom. 8:38-39, 1 Cor. 15:54-55) and thus Christians in heaven can pray for us just as well – and even better than! – Christians on earth.
