In conversation with a Jehovah Witness the other day, she stated that they don’t believe in blood transfusions because scripture says so. She quoted Acts, I believe. I can’t find it. Can anyone help? She picked a curious spot in me.
I said I would have to go to my Catholic site to find out. She said I needed to go to a JW site. HA! Like I am interested in doing that! I want the correct info from fellow Catholics!

Well, Jocelyn here it is. It is a rediculous interpretation of this scripture which is why you couldn’t find it. The verseis Acts 15:29, here it is from the New American Bible, and the NWT.

29

namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right. Farewell.’"NAB

29 to keep abstaining from things sacrificed to idols and from blood and from things strangled and from fornication. If YOU carefully keep yourselves from these things, YOU will prosper. Good health to YOU!”NWT (New World Translation: Jehovahs’s wintness)

You must have meant your title in the thread to mean, why do
jehovah’s witnesses not believe in blood transfusions? One Scripture they quote also is Acts 21:25 You don’t need to go to the jw site. Iam an ex jw, and I’ll gladly fill you in, and give you information. They do not take blood transfusions because they believe it is a gross violation of God’s law-. NO BLOOD. Back in those days, blood transfusions were never heard of it. Also, when a trransfusion is given, the body does not use it for food. It uses
it to replace what a person has lost, not to feed the body. We do not eat blood, which is very disgusting anyways. No one would!
They misinterpret the Scripture, again,. to suit their belief. How they came up with this idea that we cannot take blood is beyond me! Blood is sacred to God, and to use it to save a life, there is nothing wrong with that. Life is sacred to God. Using blood to save ones life is not a sin! The witnesses are sadly misled when it comes to the blood issue, and even sadder, is thousands have lost their lives because of refusal of blood. Look at the case of Bethany Hughes from Canada. Very sad story 😦 Thousands of families are torn apart because of the blood issue, and thousands have died needlessly because of refusal of blood, and that is alot
for that organization to be held accountable for in the final judgement when Christ returns. It is imperative that we teach the jw’s the truth about Christ, and the truth about the WTB&TS!
We must witness to them, and plant a seed in hopes that one day, that seed takes root, and grows, and the one it grows in
finds the truth, and is set free. That truth is Jesus Christ. Once freed, they can see the truth regarding the blood issue, and everything they were taught. Jesus Himself says, seek, and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened up to you. Know the truth, and the truth will set you free. They do not have the truth, they are blinded. But Christ is the light, and the Holy Ghost will lead them to the light. Pray for the person who spoke to you in hopes that that person will be converted!

Talk to Jeff Schwem! He has excellent knowledge about the blood issue, and he can inform you better than I. He has more insight into them, and he canhelp you out a great deal! He is a member here.
He also has an ex jw site. It is a very good site!

Let us know what you find; I understand that abstaining from transfusions was not an issue until something like 1960.

Would you go to a Baptist site for info about the Sacraments ? So why go to a Catholic site for info about beliefs that Catholics reject, and do not always understand ?

The Acts passage goes back to Leviticus 17.11 - as they follow Genesis 2 (for example) in saying man is, rather than has, a soul, that assists their understanding of Leviticus 17.11.

That is a website run by Jehovah’s Witnesses who disagree with the Watchtower Society’s teachings on Blood Transfusions.

I’ve used a parallel argument with JW concerning this. Some will accept the logic, but definiately not the conclusion. It goes something like this:

Is killing out of legitimate self-defense forbidden by the commandment “Thou Shall Not Kill”? Answer, No. Why? It is morally acceptable to take a life when there is an imminant threat of death.

Now use the same reasoning for a blood transfusion. When there is an imminant threat of death, taking blood is not a violation of God’s law.

That’s what I understand the scriptures to be saying.

BTW, I’m being ambiguous to shorten what I write. Maybe I shouldn’t do this. By “legitimate self-defense” and “imminant threat of death”, I’m thinking of worst case scenarios, like someone holding a gun to your head, then you turning the tables and killing this person who is threatening you.

It is off topic, but would you deprive a good German of his Blutwurst? My mom used to make it when we butchered pigs. And then there are Poles who love a soup made of goose blood and prunes. There are probably more ethnic foods based on blood because those who were poor ate everything but the oink. 👍
