Why do most people ignore the Church's teaching on contraception?

Because of the ever evolving awareness and understanding of mankind, Gods word through scripture has to be read in the context of the culture it was written in. So in the 6th century BC, people identified as ‘tribes’ or communities in their relationship with God. We have a highly developed notion of individual accountability and responsibility but in those times the sins of the fathers was routinely visited on the sons. Even in early Christianity there were still notions of a collective salvation/damnation.

They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved–you and your household.” - Acts 16:31
So what about Deuteronomy 24:16?: “Parents shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their parents; only for their own crimes may persons be put to death.”

God’s infallible Church has lost a lot if not all of it’s moral authority in the past 50 years to make pronouncements about anything.
This illustrates wonderfully the myopia which such dissent displays.

For God never “loses” His authority – the misguided dissenters choose to ignore Him.

Christ’s Church – infallible in defining dogma and doctrine on faith and morals to the whole Church – is discarded when it suits the dissenters, for a mess of pottage.

No dogma nor infallible doctrine is ever wrong or evil – but human beings can be.

God is believable to an awful lot of people. They understand it’s what He said.

People understand what the Church is saying and that the Church is saying it. God’s infallible Church has lost a lot if not all of it’s moral authority in the past 50 years to make pronouncements about anything.
In my view, the latter is in fact irrelevant. Adoption of contraception, precedes misbehaving priests scandal to which you refer. God said two things that we’ve raised in this discussion. You are saying one is a sound basis to “understand” the teaching on divorce, and the other (Church teaching authority) is not a sound basis for accepting the teaching on contraception. You can’t have it both ways.

You say God is believable, but, apparently, only to a point.

God supposedly said other things that are little bit hard to swallow. For example, according to 1 Samuel 15:2-3:

Now what sins did the children and infants commit to merit being put to death and why would God command that the oxen, sheep, camels and donkeys be killed? This and other examples are why I don’t believe that all Scripture is inerrant. In my opinion, many things in Scripture should be taken with a grain of salt and I’m always skeptical of rules that have no exceptions ever regardless of the circumstances.
I don’t know what meaning is to be ascribed to that piece of scripture. But if you take the view that some Scripture is “wrong” - then you will allow all parts of Scipture to be “wrong” which don’t align with your personal thinking, knowledge and understanding - indeed, anything that challenges one’s personal flaws and daemons. It’s so much easier…

This seems fatal.

The Catholic Church does not read scripture as you are suggesting.

Abu, please stop responding to my posts. You are rude and you ascribe actions to me that are not there.

Your goal in every post seems to be to condemn.

There’s a whole complicated story about the compilation of Deuteronomy and its 1000 year process. It’s basics, the speeches of Moses are believed to have been written separately from the other four books of the Pentateuch although around the same time ie 1450BC. It somehow made it’s way to Jeruseleum and was found in the Temple around 600BC and was added to to tie it in with the other first accounts to become the Pentateuch.

It wasn’t as though Moses spoke the Deuteronic code and the cultures of the land changed. Those changes came about very gradually.

Unfortunately, some people in this forum have resorted to name calling and accusation. I have been called a *God-condemner *by one and a cafeteria Catholic by another.

This attitude is what the Vatican II Council wanted to distance the Church from.

For those who would like to face reality, *Catholic Answers *explains.

What is a “cafeteria Catholic”?

Full Question

I frequently hear the term “cafeteria Catholic.” Exactly what does this mean?

Answer
A cafeteria Catholic is typically defined as one who picks and chooses what Catholic teaching he wants to believe. Catholics are not free to choose which teachings (on faith and morals) to obey.

Even when the Church has not spoken on a matter of faith or morals definitively (infallibly), the faithful must give “a religious submission of the intellect and will” to its teachings (CIC 752).

First, it’s not “open to procreation”. It’s “ordered towards procreation”, which means the whole Tab A in Slot B thing.

Curious, what Church teaching is being interpreted here?
Seems that’s the name of the game today!! Sorta like,“the truth is whatever you want it to be.” God Bless, Memaw
