Bishop Robert Baron and others say that suffering happened because of ‘free will.’ God is completely benevolent but knows of evil, never tempting anyone to do evil. But since the Angels have knowledge of God with free will, some decided to be enticed by evil and enticed humankind toward evil. Evil causes suffering.
All would be lost without (Grace) Divine not Merited by anyone except God, Favor, to receive strength to seek & be conformed to God’s Will through Christ. God let Himself in the Form of a Man, in humility fully Divine and fully human - suffer an extreme passion and Crucifixion. God could have exempted Christ from this, but uses this Divine Suffering to Save anyone who decides by Grace, to let Christ and His Merits transform their will to God’s Perfect Harmonious Will. It takes child-like Trust.
