Been Catholic over a decade, I’ve yet to see of one of these “lazy priests”. I see men who daily lay down their lives for the flock.

Because they have been infected by the culture of relavitism and “tolerance”.

If their poorly developed consciences says it’s OK to do something, it must not be a sin.

Blame 40 years of bad catechesis.

Thank the Lord the tide has begun to turn.

God Bless

The fact is that the majority of American priests have been badly formed in the seminary. American priests are lazy. We used to have priests in this country who ran catechism classes, were in the Confessional for hours, visited the sick, provided vespers and benediction, novenas, rosaries, and other services.

The older generation of Catholic priests got off their lazy butts and did the work of the Lord.
These priests knew they were priests all the time, 24/7, and that it was their vocation to give their entire lives to their spiritual children in the parish.

Now that we have been “renewed”, we have all the laity doing everything. The priest is only seen on Sunday, outside of the half-hour he schedules for Confession on Saturdays.

Priests have modern techonology like cell phones and cars and have done less work than the priest on horseback who visited all the towns used to do. American priests have an identity crisis.
ouch. In the interest of sticking up for our priests…I’ve known a fair few who do a heck of a lot! Apart from the administrative aspects of running a large parish, our pastor does his fill of giving talks to our schoolchildren, spiritual direction, social justice activities, pastoral counsel, campus ministry at the college level, prison ministry, etc. And he still manages to take the time to get to know his parishoners socially. Maybe you’ve known some lazy priests, but the vast majority of the priests I know are overworked and under appreciated.

Take a look at the daily calendar of your average parish priest and I think you’ll see they do a lot more than you might think.

Once a month? That is an abomination. You have a bad heretical priest.
I would like to see priests spend 3-8 hours on Saturday for Confessions. A good idea for priests would be to get rid of Saturday evening vigil Masses and devote the whole evening and night to Confession. Tell Catholics that Sunday is the Lord’s day.

How in the world are priests supposed to hear Confesion in 15-30 minutes? It might take fifteen minutes for one person to through Confension after being fallen away from the faith.
I’d be careful, Calumny is a serious sin.

Do you have any idea what the workload is like for that Priest? Maybe he has 3 parishes to cover.

What purpose would it serve to spend 3 hours in the confessional if people aren’t showing up?

And you want to cancel the Saturday vigil so maybe more people will commit sin by missing Mass? That makes a lot of sense.

Look, I wish every parish would offer confession before every Saturday evening and Sunday Mass. Some could, but don’t. Others don’t have enough Priests.

But insulting Priests who have given their lives to God and the Church, with no knowledge of the facts is REPREHENSIBLE.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

God Bless

We live in serious times and times of darkness. Catholics need to be realists about the state of Catholicism. His actions reveal serious doubts about his orthodoxy. Confession once a month indicate questions about his belief in original sin, mortal sin, dogma of hell, and the salvation of souls.

Confessionals would be full if priests actually preach sin, repentence, and hell during their sermons. The full Gospel.
A priest must preach about the four last things: Death, judgement, heaven, and hell.

If priests stressed Confession by constantly reminding them of the hours they are available for Confession and encouraged people to go. They also need to remind Catholics it is sacralidge to recieve Communion in the state of mortal sin.
I know most Catholics recieve Communion in a state of mortal sin every Sunday across this Country.
Serious doubts, especially doubts based on hearsay, are not proof. “His actions reveal serious doubts” does* not *mean he is a heretic, or bad. You said he was both.

And you “know” that “most” Catholics receive Communion in a state of mortal sin every Sunday across this country, do you? You know no such thing!

You’ll be judged with the measure you measure out with. It is possible that you might need to spend more time on your own sins and less time judging priests and fellow sinners that you’ve never met.

I have been going to Mass for most of my life. I know what most people are like. I have known many family members who have done so. I did it when I was a teenager because I had no faith and had been completely secularized.

Most Catholic teenagers are in a state of mortal sin. 99% of teenagers in our society have no real faith and are pagan. They don’t believe in sin and stats have continued to show that 80% of ALL Catholics don’t even believe in the real presense of Jesus in the Eucharist.

Rafael,

You’re quite judgemental. You have NO IDEA what the state of ANYONE’s soul is…to state that “most” teens are in mortal sin is simply you speaking from opinion and ignorance. Further, you have NO IDEA what the state of the soul of any individual receiving communion on Sunday is…to state that you “know most Catholics recieve Communion in a state of mortal sin every Sunday across this Country” might in and of itself be a sinful statement. “Judge not, lest you be judged, for by the measure you give, so shall you receive.” Judgmental folks of your ilk do great harm to the Church…please desist.

As to priests spending up to 8 hours on Saturday in the confessional…WHY? First and foremost, I’ve yet to see a Parish where that much time is required…the parishoners simply aren’t showing up. Next, many priests simply don’t have the time…most of these guys aren’t sitting around watching college football instead.

Confession once a month indicates a busy priest, or a parish that doesn’t go to confession often, or a priest with more than one parish, or a plethora of other issues…it reveals ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the orthodoxy of the priest. To state that a priest is “heretical” because they don’t meet YOUR standard is horrible. Eliminating the Saturday vigil mass so they can sit in the confessional with no one coming is ridiculous and would eliminate the only opportunity some Catholics have to get to mass…nice.

Worry about when YOU go to confession, and then encourage your family and friends to go as well WITHOUT JUDGING THEM.

I’m with Yerusalyim. We spend too much time criticizing priests and other Catholics in general about what they do, what they wear, and what happend in the liturgy.

WE ARE THE CHURCH!!! We need to be an example for people, not just a critical voice ripping others for their actions. As the Gospel says, “don’t hide your light under a basket.”

Do I worry about people, espicially our youth- yes. It tears my heart out to think of how much they are missing. That’s why I’ve always worked with youth- to show them there is more out there than the lies of this world.

I disagree with my priest about many things- mainly administrative and pastoral ones, but he definately works above and beyond and I have tremendous respect for him. He is 65 and a priest for 40 years. We have Mass every morning, he visits the school every day for prayer and catechesis and has weekly Mass and confession for the students. We do have confession before every Sunday (and Sat.) Mass, weekly holy hour/benediction, religious ed, adult classes, men’s group, etc.

He is the only priest assigned to the parish although we have one in residence who is a full time hospital chaplin. That priest covers once and a while when the pastor is visiting the Honduras Mission, and is there for confession on Sundays.

We need to show ouw brothers and sisters who are less knowledgable about the faith what an authentic Catholic life is like and that the love of Jesus in the sacrafice of the Eucharist is what matters most.

Unless you have the ability to read the hearts of others, you cannot judge the state of a soul, even if you are related to them.

Because you did something as a teen does not mean that every teen will do what you did. It is sad that you did not practice your faith as a teen, however, arrogance after conversion is not a becoming trait for a Christian.

Not sure where you live, but where I live and the places where I spend time with family are full of amazing young people, teenagers who have a deep love for Jesus.

I’d suggest you the March for Life in your state next January. Attend your state CYM Convention. Then take a visit to your local Churches during youth group nights. That will give you an idea of the teens right in your back yard who are on FIRE for Jesus.
They don’t believe in sin and stats have continued to show that 80% of ALL Catholics don’t even believe in the real presense of Jesus in the Eucharist.
80% of Catholics who check the box “catholic” on a survey perhaps. What about actual PRACTICING Catholics?

Give you another challange. Stand outside of my Parish next Sunday. Ask every person who exits if they believe in the Real Presence.

Prayers that God will soften your heart, you sound as if you have had some pain that has hardened your heart.

Do you know what a pagan is? A heretic? These are real words with defined meanings, not epithets to throw around carelessly. Why do you continue to do this?

Let us say that a Catholic teenager remains in serious sin and continues to receive Holy Communion, not because he doesn’t want to do what it takes to maintain a relationship with God, but because he has no been catechized to know better or, to be blunt, because he have been lied to about what sin is. Who is more culpable: the person who sins, not realizing that they sin or not grasping the seriousness of their sin, or the person who knows very well that their sin is serious, yet continues to do it, anyway?

Remember the Pharisee who sat in the front of the temple, thanking God that he was not like other men. Page through your New Testament, and look at the difference in how Jesus treated the sexual sinners and how he talked to the proud. This is serious stuff, all the way around.

Amen, Alleluia !

I frequently read posts that claim that converts are not “properly catechised”, clearly implying “too liberal” or “inadequate tradtional” teaching.

Yet, as in this thread, there is the other extreme. Some converts feel that since they’ve read some musings of various Bishops, Cardinals, etc., they are prepared to lecture to those of us who have been living the faith for decades.

Most converts are better Catholics than those born into it.

Your point shows something…many converts ARE reading Church documents…many cradle Catholics are NOT. You’ll find most of your “cafeteria Catholics” are cradle Catholics as well.

Arrogance because you did NOT convert is also a trait unbecoming a Christian.

Come over to my parish to see our priest work then you see what you think about priests are correct.

Again, come to my parish and see if you can make it to the confession if you show up on time! We have 6 days a week for confesison, and normally, you have to be there 15 or 30 minutes ahead of time before you are too late.

Here is the parish’s website: saintwilliams.org – two priests taking care of about 14,000 parishioners.

While some spend their time reading and pontificating, the rest of us are busy living our faith.

Interesting in light of the California Supreme Court decision yesterday recognizing gay mariage.

By coincidence there is a pending initiative for the fall ballot - the state has the cerify the signatures and there is a question if that will happen - which was driven, pushed and given life by evangelicals. The bishops were lukewarm at best. This should have been at the exit door of parishes. Petitions. But some parishes in especially liberal dioscesee did not allow it.

The priests aren’t teaching cause so many of the bishops are not doing so.

You wonder why the church is losing so many members and has one of the lowest conversion rates of any denomination in the US? Per the recent Pew report.

Its not a mystery why the church is collapsing in the US. IMO anyway.
