Because the Catholic Church’s understanding of salvation differs from that of those Protestants who believe that. Some Protestants believe that any affirmation, no matter how carefully phrased, that good works are necessary for salvation amounts to a damnable “works salvation” that denies Christ’s saving power. Unfortunately, they do not understand that the good works we perform are due to Christ’s saving power and are not in competition with it.
