Why do Protestants think they know more about the bible?

Don’t kid yourselves, people.

Protestants, especially pop-evangelicals, don’t read the Bible that much, beyond their favorite proof-texts.

They can quote a verse out of context, but I’ve noticed when I ask them what the next verse says, they only give funny looks.

What makes them madder than anything else is when you don’t roll over and admit they are right when they fire their first shot.

That may be true of many, but there are plenty whose knowledge of it is formidable.

Maybe there is a differentiation according to age & experience - it would be bizarre to assert that the late Martyn Lloyd-Jones (let one name stand for many) did not know the Bible. Nothing can be allowed to obscure the fact - unwelcome as it may be to some Catholics - that a lot of Protestants have a very good knowledge & understanding of the Bible. Perhaps we are better off in the UK - the environment is anti-Christian through & through, so if Christians want to survive as Christians they cannot really afford to be ignorant of the Bible.

As for encouragement to read it - the only sermon on that I have ever heard,in 20 years of Catholicism, was by an SSPX priest. There is perhaps too much other stuff in Catholicism for the Bible to be thought of as important, unless one is a cleric or a religious. Thank God I was not brought up Catholic, but Protestant 🙂
