Why do protestants want a plain cross & not a crucifix?

I am a convert to the Catholic Faith. I get much grief and nasty rebuttal from close family members about some of our beliefs. I can’t understand why they have a problem with the crucifix, but they say that “Christ isn’t on the cross any more. He is risen”. I’m sure they know we believe He is risen. How do I respond if at all?
