Why do so many people dislike Catholics?

It seems today that people really put down and mock Catholics. Even Protestants like taking a whack at us. Why is that? I feel that, perhaps next to Islam, we are a very misundertstood faith. I always hear things things like “Catholics are a cult,” “They think crackers are Jesus,” “They worship the Pope and Mary,” etc.
