Why do they disagree with us?

minkymurph,

With all due respect, why are you asking Catholics on a Catholic message board well known for the combative and polemical tendencies of it’s denizens why Protestants believe what they believe?

Do you really think you’re going to get a careful and nuanced answer from anyone? At best some Protestant might respond and then he or she will be hammered by some Catholic with a cudgel and you’ll get to see a fight.

Is that what you want?

If you want to know why Protestants believe what they do even about Catholic doctrine, most large denominations have websites many of which host question and answer sections.

As, for example, does my church, here:

http://www.lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=2135
No offense taken. Why did I ask on this website? Because of I have gone onto Protestant websites in the search for explainations and no one has ever responded and never asknowledged my e-mail and I have to say, they are equally as gulity of bashing other faiths and some of them are just downright offensive. I use this site for greater understanding of Catholisism, that is true, but I know Protestants post in this site and I was hoping not for a fight, but for a dignified exchange of views in the hope of greater understanding with those we disagree with. Bear in mind, I have lived in years of bitter conflict between Catholic and Protestant. The mainstream Churches here are ALL participating in discussion groups, interdenominational activites and inviting speakers from other denominations to talk on how they see their faith to promote greater understanding and reconciliation between the two communities. Having two young children, I rarely get the opportunity to attend them so I use the internet. I do not agree with Protestant theology or their interpretation of scripture, but as Ghandi said, ‘I am open to all but swayed by none.’ I believe perhaps naively, that if we had greater understanding in relation to our theological differnce and interpretation of scripture we could co-exist in a more harmonius way despite our differences. To be honest, apart from a few more open minded and learned Protestants, all I ever get in an attempt to exchange views is ‘that’s not right, your wrong and that’s a Catholic belief’ which isn’t very helpful.

Just another post in relation to Steadfast. I tried to get on the site you gave me and it just kept coming up ‘page cannot be displayed.’ (perhaps God is trying to tell me something, hee hee! just joking) I’ve tried local websites and they contain no theological information just a lot of Catholic bashing. (Well, it is Northern Ireland.)
