Why do we abstain from meat on Fridays?

Some of us older folks remember abstinence from meat on all Fridays. That has since narrowed down to Fridays in Lent (as well as Ash Wednesday). Can anyone please tell me where the tradition originated from. Many of my friends ask and I cannot give them an actual answer. Where did it come from; Why meat yet not fish; etc
