Why do we have a Pope?

Because God said so. Jesus told Peter, “You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church”. . .as well as “feed my lambs, feed my sheep.” The Holy Spirit confirmed at Pentecost the apostolic mission (see Acts of the Apostles chapter 1) and further reading of acts or the letters of Peter, Paul, and James confirm both Peter’s leadership and the Church’s mission.

Readings from the early Church fathers likely confirm apostolic succession and the mission of the Church.

Sacred Tradition underlines not only the unbroken succession of Popes from St. Peter I to Benedict XVI, but their role in leading the Church.

If you’d like to know ‘exactly’ what the Pope does, you can check out www.vatican.va. You can see what Benedict’s usual day is like; you can read the words of past Popes through their encyclicals (teaching letters). If you’d like to know personal history, try New Advent’s dictionary (circa 1913) for lives of Popes to that time; and check out sites like CA and EWTN for info on more current popes. You can also check out the library here at CA for information on the papacy.

God bless!

Don’t ask me why I can’t edit, but above where I said,
Jesus told you,
, please replace with “Jesus told Peter”.

My computer is cranky today. . .😦

Because we are mere mortals, and until Christ returns to resolve disputes in doctrinal teachings, He has to leave someone here on earth to do it.
