Why do we pick a saint name?

Last tuesday, at my first R.C.I.A. Class I remeber hearing something about picking a saints name or something like that (I was a bit nervous being around people I didn’t know all that well but, anyway) what is going on with the saints name? Thanks and God bless.

Although it is not mandatory, we pick a saint’s name for confirmation in the Church for two reasons: to have before us the example of someone who lived the virtues in a heroic way, and also to choose a friend in heaven to pray for us and help us as we live our baptismal and confirmation vows throughout our lives.
