Why do we pray to Mary?

I met this christian lady. She didn’t know I was catholic. She started saying how she doesn’t get why Catholics pray to Mary if she’s not the one who died for our sins and resurrected from the dead.I didn’t know what to say, and its been bothering me ever since. So I’m wondering, Why do Catholics pray to Mary if she didn’t die for our sins?
