Why do we say the Lord's prayer?

Why do we say the Lord’s prayer during mass?
I know it’s a silly question but I just can’t help. It’s simply because someone did a search on my blog about it.

Because it’s the prayer he himself told us to say! Why wouldn’t we?

Haha… straight answer. Actually, I’m more into, why is it said after the Eucharistic prayer, is there any meaning to it?

Ah, that’s a bit different :yup: I thought you were wondering why it was part of the Mass at all.

I’m just talking off the top of my head here, but around that part of the Mass (between Consecration and Communion) seems to be when we make a lot of the petitioning prayers - for the Church, the Pope and Bishop, the souls in purgatory and so on. The Our Father kinda seems to fit in with that theme.

I guess it makes sense that that is when Jesus is present in a special and unique way, we take the opportunity to ask a few favours 😉

Erm… I totaly forgot that Jesus is present after the Eucharistic prayer.

It’s because the Church added this to the Mass. The Mass is the RITE within which the Sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated. The Church controls the RITEs.
 
Here was St. Gregory the Great’s reason for putting it there:

“And it seemed to me very unsuitable that we should say over the oblation a prayer which a scholastic had composed, and should not say the very prayer which our Redeemer composed over His body and blood.”

Could it just be possible that because Jesus our brother is present, body, blood, soul, and divinity on the altar that it is appropriate that we pray with Him to our Father?

This is what I always think about. I remember Fr. Larry Richards saying Jesus is now before you on the altar. You are now praying as directly to him as you possibly can. Pray it slowly, mean every word. *He is right there.

Our parish rushes through the Our Father so fast. I would love to say it as slowly as Fr. Larry does during Mass.
 
After the Consecration & before the reception of Holy Communion… we pray…

Give us this day our daily bread
