Why do you have to die in order to go to heaven or hell?

Is life a closed-book or an open-book exam? That can make a difference.
Also, do you ever get the exam back with a grade, which can be contested? Which reminds me, I have stacks of exams that I have to grade.
The exam is partly open book. Make sure you read your Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth (BIBLE) and Catechism.

The only problem is that we’re tested on what we know (deeds we did) and what we don’t know (deeds we omitted to do)

The exam grade cannot be contested, so ask for mercy.

It’s strange that we can’t go there unless we’re dead, except in rare extreme cases where few saints or prophets saw both.
I haven’t read all the comments, but I’ve jumped in, somewhere in the middle. Death and judgment should help us focus our priorities as disciples.Life is good, for many people, certainly not all. But, that is our faith, to be focused in this life, on the next life.
