… HAVE to sound like Sunday night public service programming?

Seriously, have you ever heard/seen a radio or television show produced by a diocese or diocesan department anywhere that isn’t pretty much boring and low quality? They tend to be information oriented in their straightforward discussions and carried off by broadcasting novices… even when the people involved are not novices. Can’t these sort of things be creatively and intelligently produced and hosted with articulate guests and clever segments? It can be done, afterall. There are secular and religious shows all over which carry this off quite well. “CA Live” being a prime example of such.

I’d truly love to find some good stuff which is being done. If you know about any, please post about it. But everybody who I’ve ever talked to about this from various parts of the country tends to concur in the same assessment.

In the meantime, what’s the problem? And what’s the solution?

The solution is for folks like you to get involved and make it happen. That’s usually the answer to any question about “Why isn’t X being done?”

Our diocesan radio program “The Bishop’s Hour” is pretty darn good!

Well, if you want to play the Church politics game to get yourself into that sort of position where you can, sure. Perhaps that, in and of itself, is part of the problem. Most of the best Catholic radio (and communications media apostolates in general), afterall, are independent efforts.

It’s the banality that comes from trying not to offend anyone. The result is that you attract no one. The salt has lost its saltiness.
