Why does every religion have their right hand up

The right hand is used in many cultures when easting and the left hand is set aside to be used in the bathroom.
 
But why are they all pointing up with there hands in the same position

across cultures hand gestures have different meanings. So the reason they have their hands up is because this is another way of ‘saying’ something in an image. These images weren’t made just to be portraits. They were also part of the person’s message. Each society understood exactly what the image was saying with the gesture. This is well studied in art and culture. The Christian images were usually icons and icons were an established art form with meaning behind everything in the picture. We live in a society so attached to the written word we often forget that the vast majority of people were picture oriented and not literate.
