On its face this may seem like a simple question, but I don’t think it is. Let me explain. I understand that in this life suffering is not only unavoidable, it’s necessary for us to become the people we’re meant to be and to reach Heaven one day. But at the same time, because of what Jesus said in the Bible, shouldn’t we expect to have our basic needs met if we pray and stay faithful to Him?
For example, in the gospel of Matthew, Jesus says the following:
“For this reason I say to you, do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26"Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27"And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life?”
Yet there are millions of people every year who are dying of starvation around the world. I would imagine at least some of them are faithful Christians in third world countries who are poverty stricken and end up dying of starvation. This seems to contradict the above verses, since in their cases, Jesus didn’t meet their basic needs. How do you explain this apparent contradiction?
