Why does God not make his presence more obvious?

Hello all, just wondering if I could have some feedback on your thoughts. I often struggle with doubt and worry (highly analytical person) and often times I wonder why does God just not come out and speak to us, or Jesus show up and talk to us? There is so much out there about how much God loves us but oftentimes I wonder why, if he loves us so much, does he not reveal himself? I would never hide from my children. I am not trying to be disrespectful, I have always been a Catholic, but I do have my questions. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I can’t answer your question but I’d just like to add a few comments.

God is spirit… he’s not a created being like us, he is immaterial, so in a sense he’ll always be unseen to us with our eyes.

The vastness of God would be very difficult for any of us to see or even try to understand God as he truly is… consider that he created all things, from everything in the cosmos to the tiniest of things we can’t even see ‘If the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain you, how much less this temple which I have built’

We don’t just have a faith that we blindly follow, though, we have reason and we can see to an extent. St Paul tells us that we can perceive the truth of God in his creation… look at the engineering of the perfectly working organs of your body, for example: an eye, an ear, a kidney…

Yes, God being a spirit is hard for me to comprehend when I truely think about it. The vastness of the cosmos also freaks me out a bit in the sense that how can God be so big that he spans billions of light years…why so much space with no life? I do look at the intricacies of the human body, genome and so many laws of physics to where if even one was off a hair the universe would cease to exist. But the example with the body is good, however there are most definitely folks that are born without working kidneys, eyes, ears etc…so that also makes me wonder.

There is a lot to make us wonder. God’s creation is good and we were created good. Yes, people are born with disabilities and I don’t pretend to know why… I know that death, disease, suffering, came into the world because man sinned. Some are cause by man in other ways, too… environmental pollution, toxic chemicals and drugs etc.

At the end of the day, most of us have some kind of cross to bear. Suffering can, and should, be used for the greater good. Our Lord’s teaching is divine paradox: to live we must die, to find life we must lose it, to be first we must be last, to be exalted we must be humbled, etc. There are lots of big questions… I’m sorry I don’t know the answers for you.

Should I hide from my children at home and give them free will to see if I am a good dad? I think the free will thing is somewhat of a reason that has been told to explain the obscurity. I see things every day and have free will to follow them or not.

There’s no merit in being forced to follow God. He sent us the Comforter and that’s primarily how He speaks to His church. He did appear and speak to people in the Old Testament days, but even that wasn’t enough to convince all people to follow Him. An appearance wouldn’t solve the world’s problem of unbelief.
