Dear apologists,

a Muslim friend and I had a discussion recently that centred on the question why God rested on the Seventh Day of Creation. My friend’s main objection to the biblical belief that He rested was that since God is almighty and capable of doing anything at any time, why should He have rested?

I pointed out that for Christians, it is irrelevant to ask this question because God’s actions may remain mysterious to sinful mankind. My Muslim friend, however, places great emphasis on explaining religious belief on the basis of reason, which is also important in Catholicism as the recent Popes have pointed out on numerous occasions. (I am aware of the fact that I, as a Western Rite, am closer in my reasoning to the Eastern tradition in stronger pronouncing God’s mystery.)

Do you have further arguments supporting the position taken by the Church on this topic?
