Why does sex (and shock value) sell so much?

It seems to be often that the (usually female) singers that focus the most on “sex” or shock value like bum shaking, big cleavage out, general focus on bums, licking objects, female to female “sexual suggestion” etc seem to become the most successful (financially and popularity) when they aren’t the most talented.

They aren’t devoid of talent and usually have some talent, but there are other singers that are much more talented than them and don’t rely on controversy to sell and they receive less media attention.

Is it that the “shock value ones” are more catchy and commercial or is it that “over sexiness” is just what most people like?
Or is it rather that that’s what the liberal (whatever that means) media pushes on people and that people are just sheep mentality 🐑?

How does it all work?

The answer is very simple.

These things appeal to the base passions and the concupiscible appetite (which seeks after pleasures).

As our society becomes more and more debased & degraded by the day, people are forfeiting virtue and are ceasing to exercise their will and reason over their appetites; thus, they always hunger for more to satisfy their appetites.

This is one of the reasons why I am convinced our society is on an irreversible path toward utter failure and collapse. As a constantly increasing part of the population surrenders completely to sin and their basest passions, we’re doomed to suffer severe consequences as a result of the abandonment of virtue and reason.

Immoral or less moral people are more likely to acquire celebrity status in film/music/pop culture because there are fewer or zero psychological and professional filters that stand in the way of them pursing and accepting gigs/jobs/contracts, where the directive is often either lowest common denominator in order to market your product/work to as many humans as possible, or to produce purposely provocative material in order to grab people’s attention. A person with a highly structured morality is going to be thinking both short and long term about the kind of imprint they are leaving through their work and that is going to mean singing songs about butts - among other things - is a definite no-go.

Peace.

Because most people are operating on the plane of their senses, and their senses alone.

Their intellect and their will now serve their senses, their appetites, their passions, or they have effectively been gagged, handcuffed and stuck in the trunk as their passions drive away where they want.

They’ve not gained sufficient skills in self-mastery, denial.

They don’t practice temperance.

Satan is the Prince of this world. Obviously his musicians will generally be more “popular” because they are playing in his arena for his fans.

The narrow path has few who travel it.

Wouldn’t that be the case if it was primarily men that were financially supporting the singers but isn’t is usually women so why so may women support?

So a lot of it has to do with marketing and the cleverness (or cunningness) of record labels or individual singers themselves knowing how to exploit the field of marketing?

If you’re not willing to work “blue” be prepared for that you have to be twice as talented to get half the attention.

Sex sells because sex makes us feel good and we tend to attribute the pleasure we feel to the person/song instead. This is an overly simplistic view but it is something.

As for female pop singers, some of them truly think they are being empowered, probably because they used to grow up with or hear about strict modesty/slut shaming.

And sometimes I think hyper-modesty and hyper-sexuality are just two sides of the same coin–placing too much emphasis on sex.

Yeah,I get that’s the reason why some of them do it,like I read that Katy Perry had strict Christian parents who wouldn’t let her listen to stuff etc but what I don’t quite get is why the world responds so positively to them/it and more so than to more talented singers/artists.

I would get it if it was just men,but its women too (if not even more so).
Is it just that we are conditioned to this?

Because the women looking up to them also feel trapped by the whole ‘women should be pure flowers’ thing. Also because they look up to these beautiful women and they want to be like them (sexy, beautiful, pretty etc).

You can also argue that since the men give them more positive attention these days, the women are hence showing such interest.

Pretty much this.

I can remember when Sister Janet Mead singing the “Our Father” was a top 10 hit and was played on the radio like 10 times a day. Whatever gets played 10 times a day will get popular, generally.

I had to google it as it was a bit before I was born.
I do remember this song being on Kath and Kim though😊
Sister Janet Mead has a very lovely voice.
It’s hard to imagine someone like this being played on commercial radio these days…maybe Kyle and Jackie O could play it after their naked dating segment😉

(Sorry,I thought you were from Australia, ignore the references!)

It was equally weird to hear it on the radio back in the days when it was being played. Remember, that was the same era that TV shows were featuring Chuck Berry with a roomful of girls who looked about 14 singing “My Ding-a-Ling” that you asked about in the other thread.

I remember some people being disapproving that the Lord’s Prayer was being sung in that way and played on rock radio because they thought it was irreverent, especially coming from a Sister (who was wearing a short dress and blah blah blah).

I also know of one pastor in this area who was a young man then and interpreted that song as God calling him to be a priest. He said he kept turning off the radio when it came on because he was trying to resist the call but the song was everywhere and he would keep hearing “this annoying nun” no matter how hard he tried to get away. He gave a whole homily about this a few months ago.
