Why does the Church have such elaborate and expensive buildings, robes, art, etc.?

As Director of RCIA, I get a variety of questions that I’m not sure how to answer. A recent one was why does the Church have to have such elaborate and expensive buildings, robes, art, etc. rather than taking the money spent on that and giving it to the poor. How should i answer??
