Why do so many Catholic “copyright holders” go absolutely insane when “protecting” their works. In this case I’m referring directly to the introductions provided in the NAB Bible, which are described as follows:

New American Bible Copyright © 1991, 1986, 1970 Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Inc., Washington, DC. All rights reserved. Neither this work nor any part of it may be reproduced, distributed, performed or displayed in any medium, including electronic or digital, without permission in writing from the copyright owner.

There are any number of resources like the introductions on the USCCB website from the NAB that are invaluable to answer the Pope’s call to evangelism in the digital realm, but all we can do is LINK TO IT? C’mon! Why are people holding Catholic Truth HOSTAGE?!

Should we get a petition going or what?

Actually this has nothing to do with the USCCB. It is a legal issue having to do with the US Department of Copyrights and Patents. All books have this included somewhere on the first few pages. The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine may own the copyright and actually, that is a very good thing. The point is, for the most part, you cannot take this information and use it word for word and claim it for your own nor can someone us it and twist it to mean something it was never intended to mean. Also, If you found it and were able to read it, so can everyone else.

Nothing is being held hostage. As for a petition, it might be good to put that energy into evangelizing those around us and also working to save innocent lives. Again, it is for the protection of the integrity and, if you want to print the statement or use it in part or in it’s entirety, you can get permission. I seriously doubt anyone will be saying no you can’t use it.

Hmmm… I copy the text all the time in posts (along with the link for reference)… I’d never thought about the copyright issues… :o
Did I dosomething wrong there? I’m a clueless wonder here, LOL! 😛

One of the purposes of copyright is to preserve the integrity of the text to prevent people from putting out their own editions of this or that, with changes and amendments not authorized by the author, or in the case of the NAB and such works, the copyright holder.

Formerly, the American Book of Common Prayer was not copyrighted, but the 1979 edition (and previous trial use services) say, “Copyright by _______ as the custodian of the Standard Edition.”

This is done for the same reason.

And in Great Britain, the KJV is still under Crown Copyright. That’s why it couldn’t be printed here in the USA until after the Revolution.

I seriously doubt the FBI is going to show up on your doorstep and haul you off to jail:D. I think this is only an issue if you use their quotes in vain.

Let me know if you get a visit from the FBI, I’ll send you a cake. 🤷

I don’t think that it would be unreasonable to release it under a Creative Commons license such as the one in the following link:
creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/3.0/

Under the license above, anyone can use their works for non-commercial products, but may not modify the works at all…

My NIV copy says: “The NIV text may be quoted in any form (written, visual, electronic, or audio), up to and inclusive of 500 verses without express written permission of the publisher, providing the verses quoted do not amount to a complete book of the Bible, nor do the verses quoted account for 25% or more of the work in which they are quoted.”

The 25% clause may technically apply to forum posts, but I think it does fall under some justifiable…thing…

Will do. I think I’m ok under the fair use copyright laws. Thanks everyone.
