Why doesn't God actually talk to us?

I know God answers our prayers, but why doesn’t he talk to us the same way we talk to each other? I know he did it a few times in the bible and to various saints, but why doesn’t he do it all the time? Why doesn’t he just talk to us directly?

He does; you just have to be open to the fact that He may say some things that trouble you. He doesn’t always answer a prayer in the way that we expect. Jesus said, in John 10: “My sheep hear my voice”. I have heard the voice of the Lord many times, so what has happened for me can happen for you. Ask the Lord to reveal Himself in a more intimate manner.

One of the the things that the Lord has instructed me to do is to pray in tongues. Ask Him to give you the gifts of the Spirit (found in 1 Corinthians 12). Ask for all of them-- you’ve got nothing to lose.

We are all different and God speaks to us in different ways.

This question reminds me of a time when I was little, and I asked my mother why Jesus was born and lived so long ago.

Her answer was that people were much closer to God then. That made sense to me. 🤷‍♀️

For the same reason he doesn’t just work some huge obvious miracle. He wants to see who has faith and who reaches out to him. And he knows that even if he talked directly, a lot of people would just ignore him anyway.

That intuitive little voice you hear speaking inside of you – where do you think it’s coming from?

I think that there are some really great answers on this thread, but the second part of your comment stood out to me.

I’m just commenting in general because I was thinking that perhaps there are times that God may be trying to communicate with someone in different ways, but they may not even be aware of it.

He could be trying to give them an inspiring thought, or maybe a motivation to do something in particular–something like that.

I tend to personally believe that if a particularly positive and inspiring thought suddenly comes into my mind, that’s it’s usually not due to my own intellect, because it tends to be something that I normally wouldn’t be able to think of myself. 🙂

I remember a few years ago when I decided to start praying for holy souls in purgatory, I read about Maria Simma and others to whom holy souls would allegedly appear, sent by God to ask for prayers. I wished that would happen to me because it seemed interesting and less lonely.

Then I realized that God doesn’t need to send holy souls to me in that way. Maria Simma lived in some remote area without the Internet. I do not. God can send me holy souls every day through the Internet by simply having me read about them somewhere. God has lots of ways of talking to us and he usually doesn’t use the big dramatic way unless absolutely necssary.

I tend to also think that God gives each of us spiritual gifts in whatever way that he wants to.

Some people may also be more drawn to one particular type of a devotion over another, too.

I personally think that it’s all good, as long as we all continue to keep ourselves close to God.

I have that book about Maria Simma, and I have always thought that it was fascinating to read. 🙂
