Why doesn't Jesus heal me?

Do you think God hates all the martyrs? All those faithful Christians — the Apostles even — who were brutally executed?

Did Jesus’ refusal to save them from their persecutions and horrific death mean something about His Love?

On the contrary, Jesus told us to expect persecution and to take up our own crosses.

On his way to be martyred, Ignatius of Antioch saw his suffering as a means of aligning himself to Christ and advancing in Christian perfection.

He never heals me.

Dear child of God, Jesus healed you 2,000 years ago through His death and resurrection. Whatever problems you face in this life are nothing compared to the Grace God has given you in sending his Son to die for you. To prove his love for you.

It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking “I must not be doing enough, praying enough, repenting enough…” because it’s true. We never will do enough. But add Jesus to the equation and there is always more than enough. Focus on Him, not the thorns in your flesh. You will find His Grace to be more than sufficient — even joyful!

And remember the Saints who’ve gone before; you are not the first to suffer. As St. Paul recalled in 2 Corinthians 12:

“To keep me from becoming conceited… a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.“

Jesus healed you spiritually as many times as you went to confession? That’s worth more than any physical healing ever given.

I’m no great theologian. But here are some thoughts:

1. When Jesus was tempted by Satan one of Satan’s temptations was to change rocks into bread. There is more to this temptation than meets the eye. Imagine the starvation cry around the world of people starving and dying from hunger. Yet Jesus said no to this temptation while starving. Submitted to God’s will. His response to suffering was

“It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

We have a cross to carry. The sins of this world inflict illness and pain upon us. If we allow it, God uses these trials to shape our character and make us more Worthy of being in his presence.
Healing is not promised. We are instructed to endure trusting that Christ will give us the strength and the ability 2 Face all that this world throws at us.
Pursue happiness and find disappointment in this life. Pursue God and find happiness occasionally and peace through all trials.
Give yourself completely to God. Align with his son on the cross. There is no reward in this world except for the occasions when we recognize that Christ gave us the strength to get through the day.

I am praying for you. I think you love God very much. Do not feel abandoned beloved. He’s calling you to pray every minute of the day so that you can get through your trials.

This may seem harsh but I swear to you it is Mercy. If you allow it, he will use your suffering to pull him close to you and you will be all the better in the end.
How do I face my own suffering? I will confess I’m a bit of a coward. Yet every time I am weak, he is strong. In hindsight I have seen his intervention even when I did not feel it at the time.

You are in my prayers. He will strengthen you and give you an endurance. The harder the trouble the more God will intervene in the form of spiritual strength. Pray unceasingly and the trials will have served God’s purpose. All my love to you!
