Why doesn't the Church recognize my Protestant marriage?

I have been away from the church for many years. I married 13 years ago and was married to a protestant. We married in a Presbyterian church. I am interested in retuning home to the catholic church. I read a different post that my marriage relations are a sin??? I have 3 children in this marriage and want to understand why this christian marriage would not be recognized by the church?
