I am a devout Catholic and I love all the Catholic prayers (The Rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, etc…) But I also love the Bible. It seems to me as if all Protestants talk about is the Bible. They are constantly telling each other to read the bible. They place a lot of importance in the bible. Why don’t Catholics do that? Catholics read the Bible, but not nearly as often as Protestants (In general, this may not apply to all Catholics) and they place a lot more importance in other things. As I said earlier, I love The Rosary, The Divine Mercy Chaplet & Praying to Saints. Why don’t Catholics put as much emphasis on reading the bible as they do with those? I love the Bible and I think it has a lot of wisdom for everyone (not just Catholics & Protestants) Obviously, the bible should not be taken literally and we can’t just interpret it any way we want. Any thoughts on this? Thank You!!! 🙂

Many Catholics on this forum read Scripture on a regular basis, sometimes daily, sometimes several times a week.
We also hear Scripture at every Mass, and there are many Catholics who attend weekday Mass on some days or even daily.
Many if not most Catholic parishes also have Bible study groups or use scripture in their daily prayer groups and activities outside of Mass.
Bottom line is saying that Catholics “don’t read the Bible” is flat-out wrong and has been wrong for many decades, probably at least 100 years now.

Catholics aren’t sola scriptura, which means that we don’t rely on the Bible as the sole source of teaching on everything and we don’t interpret the Bible ourselves or rely on some minister’s interpretation.
We rely on Scripture and sacred tradition, as taught by the Magisterium.

If you read the Apologetics sections of this forum, you’ll see Catholics quoting and discussing the Bible left and right.

So please stop saying that Catholics “don’t read the Bible very often” because it’s just another untruth that Protestants (usually the ones who are sola scriptura) run around saying.

I am a Catholic. I do read the bible, but I’ve heard so many rumors about Catholics not reading it, I guess I started to believe them. That’ll just teach me not to believe everything I hear!!! 🙂
