Traditional Cath and/or Jeff… can I ask you something? Since I try to avoid JW questions with DH now because of the arguments we’ve had in the past I wanted to check with you…

He carries an old card with him which they (the JWs) said is invalid because they are old end expired because they published a new one (but DH hasn’t even gotten around to doing that new one), is the one he carries valid for the heatlth care system? It’s dated in 2002 I believe. But I clearly remember when I was attending the meetings with him, they said the cards expired and they needed to use the new one. I’m afraid if something were to happen to him, and I wasn’t present, that doctors would see that and not give him blood. His sister is the one mentioned on this old card. We married last yr so he was supposed to update it and put my name as his agent, but hasn’t.

What can I do? What if they called his sister? I know a verbal agreement is as much valid as a written one, but knowing how the falsetower is, thye’d call me a liar and say DH still wants his JW sister as his agent. He wants me to be it since I’m his wife, but I really don’t know what to do.

He’s really an inactive JW, he’s been missing meetings non-stop. He rarely goes, but every time I get my hopes up he decides to go. He’s taken up fishing, so he goes when he’s supposed to be in the meetings. I’m going to school now, so he could go, in the past he has decided to stay home because he didn’t want to leave me alone, but now I’m gone 2 evenings a week and one falls on a meeting day. This week he went fishing with my Catholic uncle instead… ??? Last Sunday he did the same, and Fridays, well, we go to Retrouvaille meetings so he has to miss his JW meeting. If he’s an inactive JW, how do JWs view him? My understanding was that it’s almost as if he were DF’d… how ould this affect his JW advance directive?

first off, if he hasn’t signed the new card yet be thankful! if he has the old one and his sister is named on it, and he goes out and God forbid, something happens to him that he is unconscious, the hospital will be obligated to call his sister. they are obligated to call you first because you are his wife. if for some reason, they cannot get a hold of you, and he is in dire straits they will honor the card invalid or not. make sure that your cell number is always on his person. always. make it very plain if something does happen to him that you are his wife, and they ought to consult you first and foremost. but if he has that card on him, then they are obligated to honor it because not to do so would be to go against his beliefs and they could be sued. this is a touchy situation for sure. find out what your rights are as his wife. as for his friends, well, if he is missing that many meetings his heart is not into it. it really isn’t. his friends will start to come around and wonder why he has fallen away. sometimes they put pressure on him and make him feel guilty for not being at the meetings. he is only considered inactive at this point. sooner or later they will come around. regarding your issues. jeff is more knowledgeable than iam and better equipped to answer you than iam. i would fight hand tooth and toenail if my hubby were a witness and unconscious! i would do everything within my power to make sure he lives. why? because this is a false belief. it is not the truth.
