This is very disconcerting. Surely we can talk about ghosts just a little bit tonight. Have you ever known a ghost? What did he look like? First off, do you believe in ghosts at all?

Father Gary Thomas, a widely known exorcist for the diocese of L.A., said in a talk he gave that ghosts may well be souls from Purgatory. I wonder if ghostly apparitions could also sometimes be of a diabolical nature. Anyways, I’ve never seen one yet, but I’m still hopeful.

Do you have a story about a ghost that you yourself believe is very likely to be true?

There is exactly one ghost I am familiar with. And I absolutely believe in this ghost. Has a name. The Holy Ghost, sometimes called the Holy Spirit.

Blessings,

they spoke about this on Relevant Radio the other day.

The consensus was that real ghosts are most likely some souls in purgatory who have been granted the ability to communicate with the living by God to help complete their purgatory or to even help one of living loved ones.

HOWEVER, it was also stressed that demons can pretend to be ghosts, and can even trick the living into thinking they are their loved one. Which is why, the Church says we should not talk to ghosts, even if we think it’s our loved one. Instead, we should pray for them, so they can get into Heaven - because we won’t know for sure if it’s our loved one in Purgatory or a demonic spirit trying to trick us.

I’m not sure if I believe in ghosts. I mean, in a sense, of course I do. Like ghosts are souls. But idk if I believe that the souls of ordinary people haunt the earth or anything like that.

I can’t really remember all the details, but I remember this story:
There was a guy… I think in a church one day, sitting in the pews, praying. And he heard a sound from behind him. He turns around and it was an old man. So, this guy decides to have a conversation with the old man and at the end the old man tells the guy sitting in the pews to pray for him. The guy then turns back around and faces forward, and then turns back to say something and the old man was gone. Poof.

I can’t remember where I heard this story. Or if it’s true at all, but it makes you wonder. I guess it really could just be a little spooky ghost story lol.

I know that God can certainly reveal souls in purgatory to you, but I’m not sure if he does, really. Interesting thought though.

You’re no fun at all. Go back to your catacombs.

I never thought of that. That’s an important thing to know.

That’s a little mean…
I thought Stephanie’s reply was cute!

I remember a story from when I was a kid. My older brother had gone into an empty house down the street from where we lived. The man who lived there had taken his own life. but my brother did not know that… He came back home and told mom that Jim wanted someone to help him, my mom knew this man had died two weeks before and when my brother described him it was Jim. She called a priest for she knew this soul was not at rest. I always remembered that because of the circumstances and once in awhile I think of this man and pray for him. I have heard of different stories through the years about ‘ghosts’ I believe they are souls who need prayers and thus we have All Souls day tomorrow.God Bless:🦋🦋🦋

This is not a ghost story, it is a wonderful story about St. John Neumann. Being from Philly I have the privilege of going to Mass at the shrine when I can get there’ One of the priest told me that a visitor to the shrine had come up to him and asked if he could tell him the name of the priest who was in the shrine all morning for this visitor was praying and sitting in front of the altar for awhile for there was something heavy on his heart. The priest came up to him and told him his prayers were heard, Father told him there was no other priest that morning in the shrine, as the man was leaving he pointed to a picture and said there he is. It was a picture of a young John neumann. Do I believe that. YES. God Bless:🦋🦋🦋

I’m with @phil19034, maybe they exist (ghosts being real human souls) but the possibility that they may be demons in disguise makes me want to give them wide berth, physically and in belief. I sincerely doubt that God leaves any soul bereft here on earth for years to haunt any place or person. Those phenomena are most likely demonic.

Let us pray for the souls in purgatory, seen or unseen. Oh, and having been at many, many funerals - let’s pray for the souls of all the dead, assuming that they have all gone to purgatory. I’ve heard way too many eulogies (and, unfortunately, homilies) that indicate that the deceased are now in heaven.

I have no personal experiences with ghosts, but my great-great-grandfather was involved in the Spiritualism Movement that reportedly swept the U.S. in the late 19th century. He died in 1912, and his obituary stated,

"Some fifteen years or more ago he attained a knowledge of spirit communion and for several years has been a member of the Marcellus (MI) Progressive Spiritual Association. Being somewhat clairvoyant he quite often saw his friends and acquaintances who had passed beyond the great divide and this has been a comfort to him in his declining years."

Make of that what you will 👻💀👻.

Keep an open mind. I believe ghosts exist. I think I may have encountered one, but I don’t know - could have just been fear, imagination. Who knows. Other people thought the same thing about the place that I did and I swear I did not know anything about it before it happened. I didn’t fake anything. I actually don’t think it is that unlikely that departed souls can connect with this world in some way - Christianity supports that idea. I don’t think we need to obsess or exaggerate or over dramatize any of this. It would be more surprising to me if departed souls could not come back.

Yes, I know about some ghosts. Slimer from Ghosbusters comes to mind.

Don’t forget Casper (not Cardinal Kasper), but the Friendly Ghost.

Well, if you’re going to drag Casper in, how about Wendy?

The vast majority of “ghost” experiences have natural explanations and are not supernatural - probably at least 90%.

The last 10% could be split 50-50 between legitimate supernatural experiences of souls from the afterlife, and legitimate supernatural experiences of devils posing as souls from the afterlife.
