What are some of the main reasons why he was canonized? Were there any miracles he performed?
He was perhaps the greatest theologian the Church has ever seen, and he lived a life of heroic virtue. (As for miracles, I’m sure there must have been several achieved through his intercession, but I can’t quote chapter and verse.)What are some of the main reasons why he was canonized? Were there any miracles he performed?
This is not correct. First of all, he never studied in a seminary. Before entering the Dominican order, he studied at the recently established university in Florence. After joining the Dominicans, he was sent to Paris to study at the university there (which was an indication his genius was recognized by his superiors immediately). Because he was quiet and slow in gestures/responses and large, his fellow students nicknamed him a dumb ox. St Albert Magnus told them “You call him the dumb ox, but in his teaching he will one day produce such a bellowing that it will be heard throughout the world”.He was a very stupid man and his fellow seminarians used to make fun of his stupidity. However, he turned out to become a doctor of the Church and is the patron saint of students.
I read a book on his life. It said how he was very stupid and TURNER AROUND to become a doctor of the church. Yes, I agree that he has some great writings. How else could he become a doctor of the church? This is not correct. First of all, he never studied in a seminary. He was not stupid, perhaps he was the greatest intellectual mind of the second millennium. His intellectual abilities were recognized at a very young age.
Read some of his writings and then come back and say he was a very stupid man.

Your example is a misinterpretation of his action. He was likely trying to make a point that it should be easier for a horse to fly than a monk to lie.I read a book on his life. One day some monks told him that a horse was flying over the church. He ran to the window to have a look. They all started laughing at him. He then said that it would be easier for a horse to fly over the church than for a monk to lie.
Don’t get me wrong. I am a great supporter of Aquinas. My main support for him is because of his turn around story. He is not the only turn around. Paul used to kill Christians. St. Augustine was a womaniser who had a few illegitimate children. His mother was a very holy woman who always prayed for his conversion. He turned around and became a bishop and a saint of the church.
In 1236, Aquinas was 11 years old, and entering the University. I doubt people considered him stupid. At the age of five, Thomas was sent to Monte Casino, the famous cradle of Benedictine learning. The abbot saw the boy was intellectually precocious, so he wrote to Count Landulph, suggesting that Thomas be sent to Naples for his University training. Accordingly, in 1236, we find Thomas at the said University where he studied until he was sixteen. He made such rapid progress in his studies that he was considered prodigy of intelligence. As he progressed in intellectual life, Thomas kept his heart pure from the corrupting influences and loose morals that surrounded him.
