A friend who practices Santeria - a syncretism of Catholicism and African-Brazilian religions - asked me the above question.
Her thoughts were that it was derived from old pagan practices of worshiping goddesses etc and a quick glance at a Catholic website indicated this to be partially true.
However, I do not want to “feed into” her Santeria practices by confirming this, SO, does anyone know of a way to tactfully explain why May is dedicated to Mary, without necessarily emphasizing the pagan origins?
Thanks
