Yesterday, my 11 yr old son asked if Christ died on the cross why do you call it “good friday”? hmmm, i said “i’ll get back to ya on that one” CAN SOMEONE CATECHISE ME HERE? Why do we call it good friday?

Dear Rick,

In the Greek Liturgy Good Friday is known as the “Holy or Great Friday.” In the Romance countries it is known as “Holy Friday.” In Germany it is known as “Sorrowful Friday.” There doesn’t seem to be much information on how it began to be called “Good Friday” in England.

But actually, can you think of a greater good than the fact that God loves us to the point of suffering and dying for us? If Good Friday isn’t good, then there is no such thing as a good day. Good Friday is the center of human history as well as the center of our lives. We celebrate it every time we celebrate Mass.
