Why Keep Home Altars?

Our home altar is in our bedroom directly across from the foot of our bed. When we go to sleep or when we wake up it is the first thing we see. My DH has been convalescing at home from knee replacement surgery. We have been burning a 7 day votive St Joseph candle there (until I ran out of the inserts this weekend) for prayers for the men of our family particularly (lack of jobs, marital issues, anger, health). My DH said he had never realized how comforting and helpful it was to have the altar there with the candle burning.
I will try to get a picture of it soon to put on the Home Altar thread.

I have many times in the past thought that if I were an architect I would include in the homes I design a little nook(maybe with a stained glass window)specifically for contemplation and praying.A peaceful place,insulated to noise.Houses have rooms for everything,but none for the important to us activity of praying.
I realize someone may say that you do not need to have a special place to pray,but the same can be said of having a tv room, game room, home theatre, study,etc,etc.
And isn’t it a quiet nook for meditation,which we all need, away from the noisy /busy part of the home, not much much more important, regardless of your religion or lack of it?
Just an idea for the architects out there.
