Why is ‘The Presentation’ a Joyful Mystery. I thought this was a very trying and painful moment in Mary’s life? I always feel a little sad when I come to this mystery.
In my opinion, joy is not happiness. All of the joyful mysteries can be viewed as being tinged with sadness. Joy comes from the fulfillment of the will of God.
It was joyful that the temple priest Simeon and pious woman Anna recognized Jesus as being the promised Messiah. Simeon was very happy because God had answered his prayer that he be permitted to see the Messiah before he died. I’m sure Mary was happy to see others rejoicing over her son.

The Chaplet of Seven Sorrows includes the (The First Sorrow) The Prophecy of Simeon Reading: Luke 2:25-35. – When Mary and Joseph present the infant Jesus in the temple, Simeon predicts that a “sword” (of sorrow) will pierce Mary’s soul.
But in Luke 2:28-32 there is joy:
28 He also took him into his arms, and blessed God, and said:
29 Now thou dost dismiss thy servant, O Lord, according to thy word in peace;
30 Because my eyes have seen thy salvation,
31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples:
32 A light to the revelation of the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
