Why Mass doesn’t need to be “new and improved”

This is just drivel set to impassion the flames between TLM and OF.

If TLM was said at every parish there would be abuses, too. Plain and simple.

The issue we have is reverence. The examples the author uses are simple tropes of common abuses meant to make the OF look stupid.

Want to know what parishes are sending men to the priesthood and ladies to the convent? Creating opportunities for young adults to find one another and create healthy families? All from a previously limpid and lifeless congregation? Lifeteen ones. Their rubric-following, gospel giving, adoration loving, teaching rich youth-focused Masses and catechism lessons are breathing new life into the Church.

In a diocese nearby there over 50 seminarians in all 4 years. ALL the American ones under 30 (which is about 40 of them) were once teenagers who participated in Lifeteen.

So yeah, don’t sit here and tell me that “new” things don’t work. Granted, Lifeteen is 30+ years old at this point but the fact remains, it’s the primary driver of vocations in my area.

Note: This is the diocesan seminary. There are a few order-seminaries who’s makeup is a bit different, with more of a split between TLM, Lifeteen, and Jesuit/Franciscan/Benedictine Prep schools.

Real reverence is the disposition of one’s heart, mind and soul, and not the mere execution of the rubrics of the Mass in any approved form.

Reverence does not require tradition. Reverence is a matter of attitude and demeanor. I attended enough Masses in the 1950’s to learn that point. A 15 minute or less weekday EF was not reverent. The tradition of the EF in the 50’s did not beget reverence in those Masses - they were sped through. I also attended other weekday EF Masses at the time - and they lasted longer, and the priest had a reverent demeanor.

the same goes for the OF - it is the demeanor of the celebrant which determines reverence or lack thereof.
