Why not ask Mary to

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today is June 1 - First day of June, the month dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Why not ask Mary to help us all learn as she learned from Jesus: to be Meek and Humble of Heart?

Humility is the foundation of spiritual growth and Jesus Himself urges us, if we would be His disciples to learn from Him:
Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for your selves. (Mt 11: 29)

Mary was the first disciple of Jesus, learning from Him and pondering His every action and Word. The Church in her wisdom, celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Saturday June 13, following immediately after the Feast of the Sacred Heart on Friday, June 12.

Jesus told us from His Cross, “Behold your Mother”. She is human as we are and not Divine as Jesus is both God and Man. Jesus knew we would need to “see by faith” all the marvels God can work in a humble human person, when that person is willing to give all to Him.

Jesus, Meek and Humble of Heart, make our Hearts like Yours.
Mary, Virgin most Humble, Mother and Model for all, pray for us.
 
Maybe the key is asking Mary. I believe in the statement that humility is the foundation of spiritual growth, but I find that when I try that, I am attacked from within and without the church equally. So I do not get this ‘rest’ Jesus speaks of unless it is the rest in knowing He has my back, so to say.

I think about Matthew 10:16 a lot,

“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

So He is asking us to be WISE, not be like a serpent, which is deceitful. Sometimes I give people the benefit of the doubt, trying to accept things, humbly, lets say a Bible study class. I usual end up quiet and then drop the class because its not ‘kosher’ or the materials are not Catholic. So the WISE thing to do would be speak up about it? Then I would not be humbly accepting this teaching. When I speak up, I am ostracized as not being humble and teachable. If I walk out of class I am seen as not being humble and teachable. Hence, I do not get what this rest is, unless Jesus means that as long as I seek Him I will be at rest.

Oh my, I think I have been going around in circles my whole life. I want to be humble, but I just can’t stand those disrespecting Jesus, the church or its teachings.

And I seek spiritual guidance and told instead that it is overrated. I struggle with this humble, humility thing.

We need our Blessed Mother’s intercession so much! She will intercede and lead us out of all the crisis there is in the Church. It was so special that our Lord Jesus Christ gave her to us from His cross. There are so many Marian saints who spotlight this for us!

The more we imitate Mary who is perfectly united with her Son, the more we will become like Jesus.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I believe “asking Mary is the key” to Jesus’s Heart. Truly, in telling us: “Behold your Mother”, Jesus is telling us to “see Mary with eyes of the heart” in Scripture. Her beautiful “Magnificat” is a prayer we all can take to heart and learn the humility we need. Each time I pray those verses (Luke1: 46 - 55), I’m inspired to imitate the selfless love I see in Mary. As St. Louis De Montfort wrote, we say “Mary” and she says “God”.

Matthew 10:16 spoken to the disciples as Jesus sent them on their first missionary journey is for all of us to hear, because there are indeed wolves in the world to which His disciples are sent. Man, woman and child, clergy, religious or lay – ALL are called to holiness, which is founded on true humility. Jesus and Mary were obedient to the Father’s Will. As the new Adam and the new Eve, they “undo” the disobedience of Adam and Eve. The first Adam and Eve did not do the Truth they heard from God. We likewise are put to the test: Do we listen to God or the tempter. Do we choose Truth or lies. Do we live and remain in the Truth of His Love or do we become hypocrites who do not seek to please God but seek ourselves, and the praise of men as modern day pharisees? Jesus and Mary remained True to God, living total “Yes” to Him Who is Love.

In our experiences with others, it is not always easy to discern how to love them in Truth. To love as Jesus loves we are dependent always on His Grace. Certainly, the example of Jesus shows us His words and actions of true mercy toward sinners but also His words of true justice in warning the pharisees and scribes. Yes, we need to ask Mary to help us to be wise and docile to the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, just as she was wise and docile to Him throughout her life. When Jesus ascended into heaven, Mary was left to care for the young Church chiefly by her example and perhaps she continued to say the words she uttered at Cana to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you”. I believe Mary “reminded” all who saw her of her Son. She may have smiled as He did or looked with that piercing glance of truth that can convict a heart of its own falsity.

Humility, like holiness itself is a “goal” – it requires a daily going toward the Father’s House where Jesus has a place prepared for us. We are always “on the way” while we are here and can’t really say we have arrived until we see Him in the Beatific Vision. The testimony of the saints indicates the closer they came to God, the more they felt the need to be purified and humbled more! The “rest” Jesus promises is very much as He promised His “peace” in John 16:33 – “I have said this to you that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”.

By God’s grace, may we continually “Behold our Mother” as Jesus told us, and remain in His Love as she did. Let us trust in Jesus’ promise that the Holy Spirit will bring us into the complete Truth. Jesus, Meek and Humble of Heart is the Way, the Truth and the Life for us. No other human person was as close to Him as Mary, was and is now. She is His perfect disciple and she is still obedient to Jesus’ command in Matthew 28 i.e. Mary makes disciples, teaching them to observe all He has commanded! 🙂

Thanks for your reply. Yes, we need Our Mother’s intercession and her example to help us come closer to Jesus, Meek and Humble of Heart. The Church in our time, has lessened devotion to Mary and I believe that is a major factor in the collapse of faith we see all around us. As Pope St. John Paul II said to a group of Legion of Mary members:
“…Where the Mother is, there too is the Son. When one moves away from the Mother, sooner or later, he ends up keeping distant from the Son as well. It is no wonder that today in various sectors of secularized society we note a widespread crisis of faith in God, preceded by a drop in devotion to the Virgin Mother…” (He said this in 1982!!! )

Mary our Mother, intercede for us and for all those in need of God’s Mercy.

Dear Mystical Seeker,

Thanks for your reply including the petitions from the Litany of Humility. I was struck by the repetition of the words “desire” and “fear”. How true it is that the desires we need in our striving for holiness are those desires which honor God, while the desires for our own honor from other men and women in this world, only take us further from Him! So also with our fears – we need not fear those things which may cause us suffering if we are looking at Jesus on the Cross and Mary faithfully offering herself with Him to suffer for us.

By God’s Grace, we can trust God to deliver us from all that keeps us from His Love, as Mary did. Like our Mother and through her intercession, we can grow in humility, each day cooperating with His grace.

Mary our Mother we ask you, intercede for us that we may learn to be humble from Jesus, as you learned from Him, on this earth.
