Why is it believed that a soul, not destined even for purgatory, at the moment of death, is destined forever to hell? Why is physical death of the body key?

People are always claiming that God is “outside” of space and time, and heaven and hell also. If this is so, the concept of “forever” in Hell is meaningless.

It is not that somebody goes to hell just because at the point of death he unfortunately happened to be with a grave sin .God is so magnanimous to human being, whom he created for joining with him in the everlasting life.So it is not as if he just want some excuse to throw him into hell.He want each soul to be saved. So those who go to hell will be such people have purposely rejected God,refused to go by his way and shut themselves out from the mercy and grace of God and most importantly refused to repent for their sins.It is not that they are punished permanently for missing just one chance. They have missed thousands of chances and an entire life time which was given to them to decide upon their final destiny after death.
Since God is just and keep the promise ,no need to expect that he may, inspite of all these ,suddenly decide to phoo phoo the sins of all, make it jolly and merry and take everybody to heaven.No,never.So be a bit serious about our life here. Don’t expect any mass amnesty…

I think you are wrong and Catholic teaching is precisely that you go to hell if with mortal sin at death.

I think you are missing the point of joseie’s post which was to point out that "those who go to hell will be such people have purposely rejected God, refused to go by his way and shut themselves out from the mercy and grace of God and most importantly refused to repent for their sins. People send themselves to Hell, basically. If you have a grave sin on your soul at death but you express repentance to God, then God may well be merciful to you.

The story of the priest and the prostitute, as told by a Catholic Answers apologist, is a helpful example in this regard.

Mortal sin disconnects us from God and if unrepentened, we have chosen sin and thus the Devil over God (Sin of the Holy Spirit).

It’s not like we can go to hell by accident, we shouldn’t be worried of going to hell because we might by accident go there. Mortal sin is a deliberate act that we know is bad but we chose to do it anyway. Meaning, we know something is diabolical, but we don’t care and do it anyway, this is outright rejecting God and claiming sin for ourselves

Actually, you are given an entire lifetime full of chances.
