In a discussion the topic came up as to why only one wife. Jacob has two as did many others.

My only response was, “Two wives = two mother-in-laws.” Which won the discussion.

Unless they’re sisters… like with Jacob… then you still have only one.

Yes, and you know how wives measure gas mileage?
Malls per gallon. :rotfl:

(Women, just joking 🙂 )

You guys are plain silly!

How many kids do you want to support? My three are enough, I can tell you. I can’t imagine multiple wives nagging you and multiple kids wrecking the house! Kidding!

On a serious note, Martin Luther said he could find no scriptural basis for banning polygamy or polygyny. See what happens with Sola Scriptura…

Its in Genesis, no? Adam and Eve – God’s model for marriage.

But what about all those Old Testament fellows with more than one wife? Even David who was called “A man after God’s own heart.” Its pretty fuzzy, but thats why we can’t interpret everything on our own.

Even as early as Lamech in Genesis you see multiple wives. Then you come to people like Solomon with more than 600 wives and 300 concubines and you wonder what’s wrong with this guy. Obviously his wives were partly to blame for his turning away from God. He was devoted to God, then the influence of his wives’ gods’ crept in and look at what happened to him. His kingdom was split, sons fighting each other, etc etc. All of that wasn’t because of just that one issue, but it sure led him down the wrong path.

For once I agree with Condan,🙂 , God’s model is in genesis with one man and one woman.

Peace…

Pr 27:15 A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a nagging woman are alike.more than one wife would give you a RAIN FOREST :dancing:

One wife- You do not have time for any more.
One job- You do not have time for any more.
Kids------ Both you and your wife take care of them.
Parents/Grandparents-- sooner or later you are going to help them.
Worship GOD— Daily
If you start ignoring any one of the groups, then you might have time.
You can’t please everybody all the time, but just being there for anyone who matters to you will help out. When you ask “Why only one wife”, you should ask why would I ask a question of such. Jesus was sent to us to get our heads on straight. Things were changed from the Old Testament to the New Testament but we acknowledge both for the meaning is very similar. :hmmm:

All’s I got to say is that my name is Rachel, and no matter how pretty I am (and really, I am!) I seem to be as just as non-fertile as my biblical nomi-matriarch. Lllllucky me.

Sheesh, what kind of question is this? Why one wife? I believe that, it should not be a question but, a solution. Because, it’s not because of the money and all. The truth is that, if you truly love a woman totally for who she is, and want children with her, then that is whom you married. If you want more than that, like 2-3, then it’s a sin and, you truly don’t love your wife, you don’t respect her and yourself in any way. Catholics are tough on divorces for a reason. If you say, “I Do.” at the altar, then you are committing your lives to each other. I don’t like joking about the sacredness of marriages. Even God says, whoever looks at another person with lust commits adultery, and whoever divorces his wife commits adultery. So, you are not hurting your spouse but, also you are committing a grave sin. I’m not to judge but, it’s what I know.

LIGHTEN UP GUYS…this was ment as humor.

I only have one wife because I can only take one back seat driver at a time.

Just look at the Mormons and you’ll have your answer. Visit Salt Lake City and tour Brigham Young’s house, where one of his 20-something lives lived with her children. (The other wives lived with their children in other houses. The mind boggles at what life must have been like!) I was particularly struck by the little grocery store in Brigham Young’s house which was for his wives and children. The wives and children had allowances and a system of barter to obtain the goods they wanted from the store. Amazing.

Furthermore, don’t a lot of men already have many wives? Just serially through divorce and re-marriage.

**Whew ! Don’t even think about it. **
Are you a glutton for punishment ?
