Why put makeup and wax on incorruptibles?

I had the great pleasure of seeing Don Bosco’s body today, but was a little put off by the makeup and wax on his face, hands and even hair.

Why do they do that? I think it feels a little less miraculous if they tamper with it.
 
I seem to recall that this was a common practice at one time, as it was feared that the blackish tinge to the face and the sunken eyes and nose would make an unpleasant impression. I assure you, the Saint could care less now. 🙂
