Celebration isn’t the only reason to mark the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. Perhaps Protestants will find the occasion something to celebrate, but for Catholics it can be a time for reflection, renewal, and the extension of friendship to fellow Christians in hopes of furthering the cause of Christian unity. These may be the reasons Pope Francis has chosen to participate in commemorations.
