LOL How would you like it if God said today that the only way to Him was through some technology that won’t be invented for another 500-1,000 yrs? Wouldn’t you think that was strange and not fair? That’s what Sola Scriptura is saying because what about all of the years **before **the common person could get his hand on the written word, like before the printing press and before common people could read?? They had no choice but to get to God through the church. God’s truth is timeless why would He expect people to come to Him through scripture only when only a few people had a written copy of the Bible and only a few could read it? Before the printing press made mass copies of the Bible possible most people had no Bible to read and most people back then, common people could not even read. Sola Scriptura only works for our day and time when everyone can read and when everyone can get a Bible. The Church has been around long before then guiding people in the truth.

And like others said, if it was so plain to read and understand then there wouldn’t be so many denominations and different beliefs and interpretations. Not to mention one man taking it upon himself to decide which books of the Bible he thinks doesn’t belong there and rearranging the Bible. Most people would not follow someone today who decided to rewrite the Bible how he sees fit and remove books like the book of Revelations that he claims should not be there, yet you follow someone who did it 500 yrs ago. It was just as wrong back then as it is today. Not to mention that the fruits of Martin Luther’s splitting was the fragmenting of Christianity into a million different denominations. God is not the author of confusion and the Bible says you will know them by their fruit. No, the original is always better than the remakes and protestantism is a false remake of true Christianity. Before Martin Luther, the only way to God was through the Catholic Church, if you had been born back then instead of today and couldn’t read and had no access to a written Bible, you would be Catholic if you were Christian and that’s the only Christian Church you would know. God’s truth is timeless and doesn’t need technology in order to make His truth work. 😉

Mrpizzadude: love the user name! But with erroneous claims such as this, you must surely like anchovies on your pizza.

the Word God spoke through apostles and prophets and intended for the direction of his church is now found only in sacred Scripture,

the teaching of Scripture is sufficiently clear on the main things so as to be able to make ordinary people wise for salvation and to equip for every good work,

ultimate certainty as to the authority of the Word of God written comes from the witness of the Spirit of God in the believer’s heart, and

Scripture is a sufficient and final court of appeal in matters of faith and morals.

Please accept my comment in the spirit in which I intend to make it…but…how can you profess to be Catholic (assuming that you are) and actually subscribe to this theory. ‘scripture alone’…Who wrote the Bible…when was it written, what is said regarding sacred Tradition…do some research please for yourself…Do you also believe…in Faith alone…sola fide…I am always amazed and actually pray for ‘well meaning’ Protestant preachers that wave the Bible up in the air and quote scripture while jumping around on stage…o.k.,so everyone worships their own way…o.k…but …do you believe that you will get to Heaven and there will be this huge Bible on display…no one is in any way trying to down play Holy Srcipture…just please do some research…if you are not Catholic and just looking for an argument…perhaps you might do a little reading on the subject…if you are Catholic I believe you were never taught the faith…or anything regarding what the Church teaches in this respect…Pax

Sacred Scripture (73 books) is materially sufficient for our salvation. It is the written revelation of the old and new Covenants. But it is not formally sufficient. It is usefull for Teaching. The bible cannot baptize you, nor are we told to eat Scripture to Commune with Christ. We are given the Spirit of Interpretation to keep us in the one mind of the Spirit who inspired the written Word. We have apostolic Teaching to Confirm us.

Sacred Scripture
Sacred Tradition
Magisterium (Church binding interpretation)

We can profit much from Scripture. We can learn what is pleasing to God. We can learn the gospel and Teachings of the Apostles. But we believe there is a living apostolic Teaching body always in the Church. Not to rule over us, or ‘make’ rules, but to Confirm the faithfull as a whole body what is Apostolic interpretation regarding faith and morals.

Since the Written Word was privately translated and dispersed, thee has been continued division all claiming one source! I will seek Gods unity through His Holy Orders and the Eucharist at their hands. And I will interpret Scripture through the Spirit of His one bride.

Peace
Michael
👍 Well stated.
