I agree with him on the latter. Honestly, I do. I see the Apocalypse of John used to make a great deal of money and to lead so many people not only away from the Church, but also frighten a great number of people away from Christ.

Reinventing the wheel requires something be changed. Why shouldn’t Luther not challenge the books that had from time to time been in dispute?

I also find it interesting that the Church found that, while the bible must contain these deutero’s, it did not limit the bible to 73 books. Some Orthodox and Eastern Catholics have more books in their bibles.

The Council of Trent closed the canon. Since the great schism happened well before that it is not suprising that some Orthodox have different books.

My understanding is that the Council of Trent confirmed that the bible must contain the 73 books, but not necessarily to the exclusion of other books. Is this incorrect?

Does this mean that the Roman Church could never consider 3 and 4 Macabees for any reason?

Did the Council of Trent “close the canon” for Eastern Rite Churches too?

That is correct. If one of Paul’s letters to the Corinthians surfaced (he wrote at least 4), the Church could consider it for the Canon. The odds for that? Pretty slim.

3rd and 4th Maccabees have already been considered. I don’t see any reason why the Church would re-evaluate it.

They can try, but I doubt if the Eastern Rite gave any creedence to the Council.
