Why was polygomy moral in the O.T, but not anymore?

Why did God allow the O.T prophets like Abraham and David to have multple wives or concubines, and didnt condemn them for it or it wasnt a sin? And why has this rule changed since the N.T?.

You can tolerate something without necessarily condoning it. I think that’s how it was with polygamy: God tolerated it, though He didn’t like it. It seems clear, from the story of Adam and Eve, that monogamy was what God intended, and was the rule during the state of man’s original innocence: Adam only had Eve, not a harem. There are other examples. Divorce was also tolerated under the Law of Moses, until Jesus lowered the boom on it. He even gives the reason why it was tolerated: because of the Israelites’ hardness of heart (Matthew 19:8). Slavery was also tolerated, though the logical end of Christian reasoning is that it must cease – and it eventually did, at least in those parts of the world where Christianity held sway.

Evil is evil, and sin is sin, even when it’s institutionalized. But when it’s institutionalized, it’s that much harder and more time consuming to get rid of. Plus, sometimes the attempt to eradicate an evil leads to worse evils than tolerating it.

Because the OT men were so stiff necked and difficult to deal with, that even God Himself couldn’t get through to them.

For whatever reason, God picked the weakest tribe in the region to be the “chosen people”. Probably because He wanted to demonstrate how he could convert losers into winners. Which He did. But he had to pay them off with polygamy.

Didn’t work out really well, but God only needed to use them for about 3000 years until the conditions were right for Jesus to come along.

I agree with the first response - polygamy was tolerated, but not condoned - it was/is not “moral”.

If you look carefully through the Hebrew scriptures, each instance of polygamy led to dissension, idolotry or another form of disharmony.

Blessings,

Brian

:newidea:Fascinating take on it!👍

Its too bad. I wouldnt mind having like three wives. A redhead, a blonde, and a brunette.

A tall, average, and a shortie. (like 5’3, 5’6, and like 5’9).

Id love all three of em very much! Provided they keep in shape and keep the house clean.

Oh and yeah cook da dinner.

I kid I kid. Not about the multiple wife thing, just the dinner thing. Id take em out in turns.

The other ones could get take out or just make a samich or something.

Seriously though, one Catholic woman is more than enough of a headache as it is. You know, the kind of headache that for some reason you dont mind putting up with. Catholic women from my experiences, have always been the sweetest, feminine yet strong, beautiful (especially the Italian ones, yes actual Italian and American girls with Italian ancestry) women I have known. English girls arent too far off. Love the accent and wit while still remaining their femininity. Id of course commit my earthly love entirely to one woman with gladness despite the silly comments above! I’m still up in the air on the hair color though…well, she could always dye it and wear heels for the height thing…

i know God wasn’t entirely pleased with David

not sure about Abraham. the culture of their time demands that they have children, and by all means. also, not sure if this is a valid answer, but the law wasn’t handed down yet at that time, so no chance for Abraham to know that multiple wives is wrong.

Just consider what the men from the house of Saud have to deal with: four wives and as many concubines as they can afford.

All that … squabbling and sharp elbows … vying for attention.

So, the guys buy these gignormous Boeing 747’s and Airbus 380’s as private planes to take the ladies to Paris so they can buy all the latest designer clothes. Who else can afford to spend $50K on one outfit.

Polygamy is just not what it’s cracked up to be.

[Although sometimes I wonder about some of those cults in the western part of the U.S.]

Anyway, with apologies to Mary, but Mary was an old testament gal. No polygamy involved. Except that she was with the Holy Spirit before Joseph. Sort of. Imagine St. Joseph coming down to breakfast in the morning to be greeted by the two perfect people. 120 degrees, no ice, no coffee [was coffee even invented?][did they bite on those kola nuts?]

But I digress. Do you remember the scene at the marriage feast at Cana? Mary says to Jesus, “They have no wine.”

Jesus says, “WOMAN! My time is not yet come!!” [This is GOD talking to a mere human woman]

Mary IGNORES Jesus. And she says to the waiter, “Do what he tells you.”

WHAT A SLAM! This is a human woman giving GOD the back of her hand. Wham!

I mean, I love Mary. More than my own mother. No, really. Mary is amazing.

I mean, if you pray the Glorious Mysteries, the last two are about MARY. And in the last one, she is doing all the heavy lifting.

But, (with apologies to you, Mary, my mother, my prayer helper, who lifts my prayers to God Himself) Mary is an old testament gal.

NOW, consider that Mary is perfect, but however, How would you like to be married to four women with a sharp sarcastic “speaking manner” like that … I mean, if she would talk to GOD like that, man, you and I would not have a chance.

Human society has changed, that’s why.

They lived by the flesh, not having the law written on their hearts. Divorce and polygamy (even marriage) were/and are of the flesh.

We live by the spirit. Since Christ has only one bride, the church, whom he died for rather than cast her out, we model that with one woman for life. This is the same kind of ‘dinner theater’ that prophets lived and that Israel lived by keeping the law. We have been called to be witnesses, and living this way is similar to the testimony and language of prophecy.

Israel ate clean animals that chewed the cud (meditated upon the word) which produced a split hoof (a separated i,e, Holy life). It was a testimony. We have one woman for life. It is a testimony of the law of love.
