Why was the Resurrection Necessary?

I might sound naive but I don’t understand why it was necessary for Christ to rise from the dead in order for us to enter heaven? I’m aware of St Paul’s argument in Corinthians that if Christ had not risen then our faith would be in vain.

Christ paid our debt by the shedding of his blood. If we are justified by his blood wouldn’t that be enough for our souls to enter heaven?

Don’t feel silly for asking Jesus wasn’t the first person to come along claiming to be the messiah. All the others were executed *** false prophets or somehow discredited. If Jesus hadn’t risen, all he would have been was another dead messiah. The resurrection proved his claim that he was the son of God.

If Jesus had never risen from the dead, then

He must have lied about rising from the dead on the third day.
How would we know everything he said was true?
How would we know we are forgiven?
How would the Apostles have been able to preach the Gospel?
How would we know about the Resurrection of the dead?
etc. etc.

But aside from all of that,

Our High Priest and King would be dead.

The Resurrection is as crucial to the completion of the Sacrifice on the Cross as the Holy Eucharist on that first Holy Thursday was to beginning of the Sacrifice.

Everything in our Faith is built upon the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

There are many textbook answers to this question, but the most effective personal answers will be those that come from the Holy Spirit when meditating on the Resurrection.

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus overcame death. Even though we are sinners, through Jesus, we too shall overcome death and be risen again.

Resurrection of the Body was a common Jewish belief in the second Temple era. Jesus’ rising confirms it and foreshadows our own eventual resurrection.

Humans are not just souls attached to a body, we are body and soul, and both were made good. Jesus was fully human, and when he ascended to the heavenly temple he went body and soul, not just as soul.

Hey there friend, it was to fulfill the scriptures. Remember, there were many folks at the time of Christ that did not believe in the Resurrection. In the Bible, they are called Sadducees, God bless!

How could death conquer God? God submitted Himself to death for our sins, but rose to defeat death, thereby opening the gates of Heaven.

SJacob7 cited it perfectly with Romans 6:23.

Only a God who can defeat death is worth following through it!

Also, the bodily resurrection is needed to affirm the value of our bodies. Counter to the popular wisdom, in the life everlasting we will have bodies (rather, be bodies).

We don’t really have a great deal to have faith*** in*** without the Resurrection. The New Covenant is not about universal salvation, as if Christs work now makes heaven mandatory for everyone. Its about reconciliation with God so that we may believe and trust in Him again. This faith means* restored relationship* between man and God, a relationship without which justice and order are compromised within man and without, in his world. Faith is our part, as a response to what He did.

The resurrection of Jesus foreshadows our own resurrection of the body on the last day “For God formed us to be imperishable;
the image of his own nature he made us.
But by the envy* of the devil, death entered the world,
and they who are allied with him experience it.” (Wisdom 2: 23-24).

“But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits* of those who have fallen asleep.
For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead came also through a human being.
For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life,
but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ;
then comes the end,* when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power.
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
The last enemy to be destroyed is death,
for “he subjected everything under his feet” (1 Cor. 15: 20-27).
