In the OT,God makes much mention about circumcisions etc.
Looking at it through “today’s eyes” it all seems a bit bazaar.🤷‍♀️

Blood covenant. Leviticus 17
11 since the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement[a] on the altar for yourselves, because it is the blood as life that makes atonement.
Hebrews 9
22 [a]According to the law almost everything is purified by blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.
Catechism
527 Jesus’ circumcision, on the eighth day after his birth, 209 is the sign of his incorporation into Abraham’s descendants, into the people of the covenant. It is the sign of his submission to the Law 210 and his deputation to Israel’s worship, in which he will participate throughout his life. This sign prefigures that “circumcision of Christ” which is Baptism. 211

209 Cf. Lk 2:21.
210 Cf. Gal 4:4.
211 Cf. Col 2:11-13.

Racial separation… a sign that they were called out by God.

This is why Paul was so adamant that it was no longer a requirement. When he criticizes “works of the Law”, he meant these racially seperating ones. Not morals (like Protestants believe). In Christ, there is no longer race. “No Jew or Greek”. But Paul instructed on morals many times… but a distinction was to be made with these type of instructions.

While no one knows the Mind Of God, I think
God used this act as a religious act, yes,
but it also helped with hygiene.

Here is some more from St. Thomas on why this ceremony was fitting:
It was fitting for circumcision to be performed on the virile member. First, because it was a sign of that faith whereby Abraham believed that Christ would be born of his seed. Secondly, because it was to be a remedy against original sin, which is contracted through the act of generation. Thirdly, because it was ordained as a remedy for carnal concupiscence, which thrives principally in those members, by reason of the abundance of venereal pleasure.

As someone who finds circumcision of minor boys to be extremely unethical genital mutilation and a human rights crime against the child that should be illegal, it is very difficult to rationalize the Hebrew obsession with circumcision. The body is supposed to be a temple designed perfectly by God. God makes no mistakes…except for male foreskin? Jews will not even allow tattoos or body piercings, even ear piercings for earrings. But chopping an entire functional body part designed by God off of the sex organs of little screaming baby boys in extreme pain & torture, such a horrific monstrous barbaric act…is seen as a sacrosanct commandment by the Jews?

Even the story of Abraham & Isaac is utterly awful, Abraham is willing to stab his son to death, he ties the poor little boy up to stab him dead, lies to his son what he’s doing, but then ‘God’ says haha was just joking, just chop your son’s most sensitive body part off with a sharp rock and no anesthesia using 3000 BC medical technology? Just awful…but it is impossible to take literally many of the horrendous words & deeds attributed to YHWH in the Hebrew Bible & reconcile that with the message of the Gospels of Jesus.

A strict literalist non-critical interpretation of the Old Testament is incompatible with contemporary Christian morality, just have to view it in critical context. 3,000 years ago in the sandy desert, circumcision may have been of cleanliness benefit to Jews, don’t have to wash sand out from under the foreskin if it’s cut off, there were practical reasons just like for not eating ‘unclean’ animals. In the modern world of hygiene & running water where it’s easy to wash under the foreskin, there is no longer a justification of any sort for circumcision of non-consenting children, whether male or female.

Circumcision reduces sexual desire?
Sorry I’m a woman so don’t really know this.

I struggle with this sometimes too.How can NT be reconciled with “those” stories in the OT?

Circumcision was actually practiced by a number of indigenous peoples, not just the Jewish people.
It has been done in parts of Africa and by some indigenous Australian peoples too from what I read.

It usually seems to have been done for a combination of hygienic and spiritual reasons. It was believed that the practice helped prevent disease and kept the man’s member cleaner, especially in areas where water to wash was lacking. The spiritual part usually seemed to be associated with the shedding of blood as a sacrifice or as backing up some type of vow.

Also, once it was done, the man with the circumcised penis was clearly marked for life as a member of whatever tribe the practice was associated with. There was no way he could hide it or deny it.
